Gunpla, short for Gundam plastic models, refers to the plastic mecha models, characters, and vehicles from the Japanese Gundam franchise marketed by Bandai. The term was coined from "Gundam plastic model" and debuted in 1980.
THE GUNPLA PHILOSOPHY: Models for everyone! "No glue or paint required." All Gundam models have two key features:
- The parts are interlocking
- They are molded in color.
Gunpla models are classified by grade based on their quality and/or size. The main categories include:
- NG (No Grade): Referring to the first models released in 1980, before the term was used.
- HG (High Grade): The first 1/144 scale series, released in 1990.
- MG (Master Grade): Higher quality models than HG, featuring fully detailed internal mechanisms in 1/100 scale (1995).
- PG (Perfect Grade): The most technically advanced models in 1/60 scale (1998).
- FG (First Grade): Budget-friendly models with clip-on assembly (1999).
- HGUC (High Grade Universal Century): A popular reissue of Universal Century models (1999).
- EX-model: A range dedicated to vehicles and flying machines rather than robots (2001).
- MS Mega Size: A 1/48 scale range (2009).
- RG (Real Grade): Similar to Master Grade but in 1/144 scale with an advanced internal skeleton (2010).
- RE/100 (Reborn One Hundred): A new 1/100 scale series (2014).
- SD (Super Deformed): Parody models of the Gundam saga with exaggerated features.
The classification is even more complex, depending on the scale (ranging from 1/550 to 1/35), improvements (Master Grade versions 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0), and special event releases, such as the Ver.G 30th series for the 30th anniversary of the franchise.
