The basic premise of Yona of the Dawn follows Princess Yona, the sole daughter of the peaceful King Il of the Kouka Kingdom. Yona lives a carefree and sheltered life within the palace, oblivious to the dangers of the world outside. Everything changes dramatically on her 16th birthday, when her cousin and childhood friend, Soo-Won, whom she loves, murders her father and seizes the throne. Forced to flee the palace with her bodyguard, Son Hak, Yona suddenly finds herself alone and unprotected. Her adventure begins as she tries to survive and, following an ancient legend, seeks out the four legendary Dragon Warriors to help her protect her kingdom and find her true destiny.

Princess Yona is accompanied on her journey by a diverse group of characters, who become her most loyal companions. Son Hak is her childhood friend and bodyguard, known as the "Thunder Beast of Kouka," an exceptionally skilled warrior and former general, who remains devoted to her to the end. Yun is a young, intelligent, and practical boy who serves as the group's "brain," skilled in medical knowledge and cooking, despite being the youngest. The four Dragon Warriors that Yona gathers are Kija (White Dragon), Shin-Ah (Blue Dragon), Jae-Ha (Green Dragon), and Zeno (Yellow Dragon). Each has a unique power, a distinct personality, and their own story, forming a dynamic and complex group that helps Yona mature and face challenges.

Yona of the Dawn explores a multitude of themes common in shojo and fantasy anime/manga, but approaches them with depth and character development. Central to it is Yona's personal growth and empowerment, as she transforms from an innocent princess into a strong and determined leader. The theme of betrayal and revenge is explored through her relationship with Soo-Won, but the series focuses more on reclamation and protection rather than simple vengeance.
