Aquaman, whose real name is Arthur Curry, is an iconic DC Comics superhero and the rightful king of Atlantis. His origin is unique and split between two worlds. He was born to a human mother, Atlantis (or Atlanna in later versions), the Queen of Atlantis, and a human lighthouse keeper, Tom Curry. This mixed heritage grants him powers derived from both worlds. He grew up on land, but soon discovered his ability to breathe underwater, to communicate with marine life, and to possess superhuman strength and durability, which are enhanced when in water. Arthur eventually discovered his royal lineage and took on the role of king of Atlantis, an underwater empire. Aquaman possesses an impressive set of powers that make him a formidable hero, especially in aquatic environments. He serves as the primary liaison between the surface and the underwater world, ensuring the balance and protection of both. Aquaman has faced a multitude of powerful adversaries, many of whom originate from the underwater world, as well as from the surface. Black Manta is Aquaman's arch-nemesis, a ruthless treasure hunter and mercenary who harbors intense hatred for Aquaman and Atlantis, often wearing a distinctive black armor with a helmet that fires optical blasts. Orm Marius, also known as Ocean Master, is Arthur's half-brother and an aspiring king of Atlantis, who believes surface dwellers pose a threat and often seeks to wage war against them. Other adversaries include King Shark, a mutated creature with immense strength, and Siren, an assassin who uses her beauty to lure her victims. These adversaries test Aquaman's strength, leadership, and resolve as a king and hero.

Aquaman has starred in many notable stories that have highlighted his character and his place in the DC Universe. The character's revitalization by Geoff Johns in the "Aquaman" (The New 52, 2011) series is considered pivotal, as it shed old stereotypes and presented a grittier, more serious, and dynamic king. The "Throne of Atlantis" (2012-2013) storyline, also written by Johns, depicted a war between Atlantis and the surface, highlighting Aquaman's importance as a bridge-builder.
