The basic premise of Shaman King is set in a world where shamans are people with the ability to see, communicate, and unite their powers with spirits. Yoh Asakura is a laid-back and dreamy teenage shaman, whose goal is to become the Shaman King, the only one who can communicate with the Great Spirit and change the world. To achieve this, he must win the Shaman Fight, a tournament held every 500 years in which shamans from all over the world battle each other. Yoh, along with his guardian spirit, Amidamaru, and his friends, Manta Oyamada and Anna Kyoyama, embarks on a dangerous journey, facing powerful opponents, including his twin brother, Hao Asakura, who has much darker plans.

Yoh Asakura is accompanied on his quest to become Shaman King by various valuable allies and friends. Hao Asakura is Yoh Asakura's twin brother and the main antagonist of Shaman King. He is an incredibly powerful shaman with a terrifying ability to reincarnate and retain his powers and memories in each new life. His ambition is to become the Shaman King to create a world exclusively for shamans, exterminating all non-shaman humans, whom he considers destructive and unworthy to live. His extreme power, his relationship with Yoh, and his dark beliefs make him a complex and threatening adversary. His desire for a "pure" world, based on the power of shamans, drives him to ruthless actions and makes him the greatest obstacle to Yoh's attempt to bring peace.
