The basic premise of Fire Force is set in Tokyo, in a world where humanity is plagued by a mysterious phenomenon called "Spontaneous Human Combustion." This phenomenon transforms humans into fiery monsters known as "Infernals," which are capable of causing immense destruction. To combat this threat, special firefighter units, the "Fire Force Companies," have been created, composed of pyrokinetics – individuals who have the ability to manipulate fire without transforming into Infernals. The story follows Shinra Kusakabe, a young and ambitious pyrokinetic nicknamed "Devil" due to his smile and his igniting feet. Shinra joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 with the goal of uncovering the truth behind his family's death in a fire years ago, and saving the Infernals by pacifying their souls. Along the way, he uncovers a dark conspiracy directly linked to the phenomenon of Spontaneous Human Combustion and a mysterious organization manipulating fire for its own purposes.

Special Fire Force Company 8 consists of a diverse, yet effective cast of characters who work together to combat Infernals and uncover the truth. Shinra Kusakabe is the protagonist, a Third Generation pyrokinetic who uses his feet to generate flames. He is determined, with a strong sense of justice, and dreams of becoming a hero. Arthur Boyle is a Third Generation pyrokinetic who believes he is a "Knight King," creating a plasma sword. Although extremely powerful, he is also naive and detached from reality, leading to comedic situations. Maki Oze is a Second Generation pyrokinetic, a former soldier with incredible physical strength and the ability to create fire spirits (Sputter and Flail), while also being romantic and loving cute things. Takehisa Hinawa is the Lieutenant of Company 8, a serious and responsible leader with the ability to precisely control fire. Iris is a nun who accompanies the team, providing spiritual support and care. Together, this team faces challenges and develops strong bonds.

Fire Force explores a multitude of themes that combine action, mystery, and spirituality. Central to it is the search for the truth behind the phenomenon of Spontaneous Human Combustion and the dark conspiracy surrounding it. The theme of faith and religion is dominant, as the Fire Force Companies often cooperate with the Holy Sol Temple and fire is considered sacred. The concept of a "hero" and how people cope with loss and trauma are also explored. The series addresses the power of friendship and cooperation in confronting fear and destruction. Furthermore, it examines science versus religion and how human nature can be both destructive and salvific.
