The basic premise of One Punch Man follows Saitama, a man who, after training rigorously for three years, gained unfathomable strength – so immense that he can defeat any enemy with a single punch. This excessive power, however, has led him to a state of profound boredom and disappointment, as no fight is a challenge for him anymore. To find some meaning in his life and feel the adrenaline rush again, Saitama decides to become a hero and join the Hero Association, an organization that protects the world from monsters and villains. Despite his incredible abilities, he is often not recognized for his power and must face daily routine, lack of recognition, and the search for a worthy opponent.

Saitama, though often alone in his indescribable power, is accompanied by a small circle of characters who add humor, drama, and plot to the series. The most important is Genos, a cybernetic warrior who becomes Saitama's disciple, admiring his incredible strength and trying to understand its secret. Genos is serious, devoted, and often gets destroyed in battles, but always returns stronger. Other key characters include the top heroes of the Hero Association, such as Tatsumaki (Terrible Tornado), the powerful psychic, and Silver Fang (Bang), an elderly but exceptionally skilled martial artist. Also, King, a hero who, unbeknownst to Saitama, gains his reputation thanks to Saitama's victories.

The Hero Association is a global organization established to protect cities from the frequent threats of monsters and villains. It functions as a bureaucratic structure that classifies heroes into various classes (S, A, B, C) based on their strength, effectiveness, and popularity. Heroes receive a salary and undertake missions to protect citizens and defeat threats. Although Saitama is the strongest, his lack of recognition and inability to pass the exams based on his strength keep him in a low rank, often leading to comical situations and revealing the flaws of the system. The Association is a central element of the social structure of the One Punch Man world.

Despite his absolute and unchanging power, Saitama evolves as a character in more subtle and psychological dimensions. His evolution is not about gaining more strength, but about coping with boredom and searching for meaning in a life without challenges. Through his interactions with Genos and other heroes, Saitama begins to understand the value of friendship, recognition (even if he doesn't actively seek it), and the responsibility that comes with his ability to protect others. He also learns to cope with the social isolation caused by his overwhelming power. His development focuses on finding human connections and a purpose beyond battles, which makes him a complex and relatable character, despite his superhuman abilities.
